Before you go thinking that this is about kidnapping the elderly, be assured I am not that cruel. Although in the case of this old dear, I could make an exception.
A few short weeks ago, I was doing the weekly food shopping at my local Tesco. Amongst other things on my list, was a small Danish loaf for my wife (sounds like a good swap). I walked around the store putting items into my trolley and crossing them off my list as I go. I got to the bread aisle and managed to grab what was the last loaf of bread that my wife had asked for. As I walked the length of the aisle, I stopped part way and grabbed two loaves of bread for myself. As I did this, I saw an elderly lady put her hand on the Danish loaf in my trolley and start to take it out. I quickly put my hand on the loaf and verbally assured her that she was not
going to get MY loaf of bread;
"Excuse me" I said politely pressing the Danish loaf back into my trolley, "that's my loaf of bread". "But it's the last one", she said in reply, trying to make it sound like it's my fault. "But it's MY bread" I said in response. She looked at me in disgust as if I had to let her have the bread. "I want this bread and it's the last one" she said again trying to make me feel guilty for being there first. "This is MY loaf of bread, you will need to find yourself another", I said with authority in my voice still holding on to the small loaf. At this point she finally decided to let go of the bread and speak to me in a very displeasing tone, "well I suppose I will have to get myself another one instead" is what she said in such a way that made it look like she didn't want to lower herself to my level.
She finally walked away and found herself another loaf (was that so difficult). For the remainder of my shopping excursion I noticed that numerous people were staring at me and making comments to themselves. All because of the way that the blue rinse bread thief made a scene, it portrayed me as the bad guy. I could imagine the comments now, "no respect for the elderly", "how would he like it if someone was like that to his grandma". My grandma is not a thief who thinks that she has the right to take things out of other people's trolleys like a homeless person going through a bin.
